How I Joke

No matter what type of writing I teach - creative or business - I encourage each student to honor his or her creative power. The internet requires businesses to be clever and quick with copy. In this environment, tapping into each employee's muse is essential. I also teach a long list of tips, tricks, dos, and don'ts to ensure a concise, compelling style. My approach is based on my improv training and 12 years as an editorial lead for tech startups.

Socrata Marketing

Socrata's marketing needed writing training to improve and unify the company's voice. I created a custom class that emphasized utility and brevity.

"Like so many managers, I wanted my team to improve their writing skills but couldn’t send them back to school. Bridget came to the office and, within a couple of sessions, had the team way more confident, creative, and productive. Her class was a great investment." - Amy Winner, Director of Community Marketing

Stanford Write Retreat

Stanford Sierra Camp asked me to bring improv's teachings on creativity to their annual "Write Retreat." I morphed improv games into writing exercises, such as The Story Spine, CROW, and line-at-a-time stories.

"What surprised me was how much I've been detaching myself from my creativity. Everything we did was based upon my own creativity and it helped me remember to believe in myself again." - Devon L., Graphic Designer

Applied Improvisation Network Conference

Improvisers are often comfortable telling stories out loud, on the spot. But, many feel less comfortable putting words on a page and accepting them. I led my students through writing exercises to help them love their muse, reduce judgement, and write more.

"I really valued the "Yes, and.." application in the exercise and then in the writing. I think it creates huge space for creativity and for keeping the persnickety, kill-joy editor away." - Tony C.
